Australian soul singer Mahalia Barnes and legendary blues/rock guitarist Joe Bonamassa are set to make music fans say ‘ooh yea’ with their soon to be released collaborative album. The duo, who individually have made names for themselves in music through the genres of soul, blues and rock are about to release Ooh Yea! The Betty Davis Songbook, which pays homage to one of the great funk and soul singers of the 60s and 70s, Betty Davis. In celebration of the albums release on February 24, the duo, along with Mahalia’s band, The Soul Mates, hit Sydney’s The Factory Theatre to debut the album’s heavy soul sound.
After hearing Barnes and Bonamassa perform songs from Ooh Yea! it’s clear that this is one album that is a must-have for fans of soulful funk music. While Barnes’ is best known for her trademark gutsy vocals, the performance showed varying facets of her as a performer, from surprisingly delicate and vulnerable, to fierce and fiery. The addition of Bonamassa’s guitar work meant that the body of work had the perfect balance of rock and bluesy tones. All the shades of soul that were on display at this special show served to simply increase anticipation for the Ooh Yea! The Betty Davis Songbook. It’s lucky then that in the meantime you can head here to receive a free track from the album.
