Recent birthday girl Janelle Monáe hit up The Queen Latifah Show earlier this week to discuss the COVERGIRL #GirlsCan campaign. The electric lady took a break from her trademark staple uniform of tuxedo style suit and pompadour hairdo, instead switching things up in a black crop top, fitted black-and-white skirt and fly wide brim hat. But this appearance on The Queen Latifah Show was important for so many more reasons than how divine Monáe looked.
The singer and Queen Latifah chatted about the two things she can’t leave the house without, and they didn’t include her favorite COVERGIRL lipstick, but her self-confidence and peace. The pint-sized, Kansas-raised singer discussed how she shakes off her stress (letting loose to rap music and reconnecting with family, to name a couple of her methods) and how her blue collar roots inspired her to push for her dreams and not a take a moment for granted, noting that “country girls like myself, we don’t get these opportunities.”
While on The Queen Latifah Show set, Janelle also had the chance to surprise one of her biggest fans, McKynzie Duhon from Louisiana. In this world, where young girls are shown over-sexualized images on the daily and somehow it’s become the norm for pop stars to not wear clothes, McKynzie found inspiration in the unique and humble Monáe. As the 10-year-old discussed how Janelle inspires her and got herself prepared to do a tribute performance to her favorite android, Monáe danced right up to McKynzie and gave her the shock of her life. The singer’s honest and powerful statement to Mckynzie, “You don’t have to be perfect…you are enough,” coupled with her humility serves to not only endear her more to fans everywhere but remind us all that she truly is the definition of an electric lady.
#GirlsCan is a powerful program that sees $1 from every marked COVERGIRL mascara sold donated to a charity that works towards helping women break barriers. So after you watch Janelle and Queen, go ahead and make a COVERGIRL purchase and make a difference.
